The Games We Play
The Game Board Portrait Series by Susan Dampf
IF
Oil On Trivial Pursuit Game Board by Susan Dampf
Open to the public on San Pedro’s monthly 1st Thursday Art Walk
on January 4, 2007 from 7 – 11 PM and by appointment.
Adults only, please.
The
ultimate game for most of humanity is called "life,"
and Long Beach artist, Susan Dampf, from her keen observations
of people, has produced a series of "game board portraits"
engaging a specific lifestyle she knows intimately, "The
Lesbian."
What inspired Ms. Dampf to create this series was that she wanted
to cause others to examine their own state of being, how they
see the world, and the games they play in order to create the
illusion of their intended life. Her desire is that each viewer
will place themselves in the role of one of the characters in
her paintings and apply the ensuing game dialog to their own
life.
This provocative and beautifully rendered series places lesbians
in highly visible and vulnerable states of being as each character's
special game is exposed against a canvas of a Clue, Parcheesi,
Monopoly etc, game board. Lesbians from all walks of life are
represented in "The Games We Play" including Ms. Dampf
's illustrious fans and supporters such as LGBT icon, actor
and activist, Ivy Bottini, author ("Dykes To Watch Out
For" and "Fun House"), Alison Bechdel and author
and playwright ("Gay Old Girls" and "Secret Service:
Untold Stories of Lesbians in the Military"), Zsa Zsa Gershick. |
