Modern Slave, a new exhibition of fine art gelatin
silver photographs by JD Dragan, challenges the roles of modern men
of color.
JD Dragan has been exclusively photographing men
of color for over thirty years. His award winning body of work is
considered a cornerstone within this underappreciated field of male
nude photography. Spanning ten years, Modern Slave at AxD gallery
reflects Dragan’s strongest held beliefs regarding the effects
of the external and internal forces stifling all men of color in America
and throughout the world today.
| Each of Dragan’s subjects are chosen after
several lengthy interviews to not only evaluate one’s comfort
with baring flesh in front of a camera, but to best capture a model’s
unique personality. As a result of this unorthodox selection process,
Dragan has not only discovered the honest eroticism of his subjects,
but their complex and often heart-wrenching personal histories.
No longer to be seen as human beings only worthy of subjugation
and as mere objects of sex, fear or parody, JD Dragan hopes the
men depicted in Modern Slave can finally be appreciated in ways
that both celebrate their ethnicity and champion their individuality |
