Robert Olliver-Jones says
of his work…
“ I am a figure painter who is inspired by the arrangement
of bodies in space, their relations to it and to one another providing
a language to explore a diverse range of experiences and emotions
including fear, hope, loss, vulnerability and compassion.
I would describe my style as classically figurative with flashes
of photo-realism but with a strong personality that is easily
recognised. I aim to make tender, sensuous and at times provocative
paintings, rich in metaphor, symbolism and layered meaning with
heightened emotional depth.
I allow myself the freedom to trust my instincts when it comes
to subject and composition and I take many of my references and
influences from contemporary film, dance and theatre, in particular
the film maker and artist Derek Jarman, the films by Peter Greenaway,
the choreography of Pina Bausch and DV8 and the music of Michael
Nyman…”
