The above image,
an original Tom of Finland drawing, will be awarded to this year’s grand
prize winner!
This year we
have expanded from four to five suggested entry categories, with prizes
for the top three winners in each category. The contest is open to all
artists, amateur and professional, who have not sold any erotic
artwork.
The
Categories This Year Are:

PHOTOGRAPHY
Three prizes
are given in each category including the JAY

During one Tom
of Finland exhibition at Feature Inc., a busload of people visited the
gallery next door and a few wandered into Feature. A woman, say in her
60s, came in, carefully looked around, left, and soon returned with
a male/female couple of a similar age. They were in the gallery for
quite some time.
On their way
out, as they passed by the office, they were quietly speaking among
themselves, and the woman from the couple mentioned that she thought
she had just seen pornography, and the other woman replied, “Yes, but
did you see the way they were drawn?” Overhearing that left me floating.

times, the site of gay pleasure, sensuality, and communality was the
ol’ swimming hole, celebrated by artists like Walt Whitman and Mark
Twain, Thomas Eakins and Henry Scott Tuke. Photographer and publisher
Bob Mizer and illustrator Touko Laaksonen (“Tom of Finland”) relocated
the Victorian Eden to the filling stations, pools, bars, gyms, and barracks
of a landscape remarkably like Los Angeles, a sunbaked utopia where
every man’s a dreamboat and he’s bursting out of his jeans to get at

Gay Male Relations Common In Pre-war Finland

A new thesis up for review
contends that Finnish men were commonly having homosexual relations
as far back as the Second World War. The reasons for the same-sex engagements
include curiosity, money, passion, a lack of women and inebriation.
In her dissertation, Sandra
Hagman contends that sexual relations between men were common before
the Second World War and they did not restrict people. The thesis tells
the story of modern same-sex romance through the experiences of seven
men.
According to the paper, Finnish
men were engaging in gay sex for a number of reasons, including curiosity,
money, passion, lack of women and drunkenness.
